C&G in the Community - CSR initiatives


To help alleviate poverty in Samburu area at the Coast listed company Car & General Limited through the Cummins Foundation and Lions Club of Mombasa have partnered to construct two dams worth three million shillings. This will aid residents in these areas to harvest rain water for farming to reduce the perennial problem of starvation.

Vijay Gidoomal, the Group Managing Director of Car & General said, "We hope the dams will help to break the cycle of poverty caused by women and children walking several kilometers to fetch water denying the youngsters an opportunity to attend school. Due to drought in this area, people have been surviving on relief food supplied by the Red Cross."

The Company and the Club in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture will ensure that the communities have a steady supply of water for growing crops for food. Working with the people in the area and local industries, the Lions Club will provide training in the use and maintenance of the dams and proper farming methods.

Car & General and Cummins are building two dams, each with a capacity of holding 5 million liters of water. The progress on their construction is on schedule. Final level of excavation is now going on and slabs for lining the walls have started to be delivered at the sites.


- Eye Care Program -

C&G runs an eye care program in conjunction with the Lions Club. This is intended t each needy people with eyesight problems. The Shs 1.75 m C&G-sponsored program provides free eye check up, surgery operations for cataract cases, glasses and medication. Six events will be held in 2011, two so far done in Mombasa and Eldoret and the 3rd one to be held in Kisumu on 29th May. Lions Eye Clinic
Goes to Voi Residents

- Collaboration with education institutions -

C&G signs memoranda with universities and technical raining institutions to offer training sessions to students and even lecturers at our facility and donate equipment. So far Machakos Technical Training Institute has its program undergoing. This program enables students in the said colleges connect with industry well by training, offering attachment positions and general support of the institutions.

- Mechanics training program -

To help in the fight against road accidents in Kenya, C&G has rolled out an extensive road safety campaign which targets two and three-wheeler mechanics in all regions. C&G technicians also travel around the country to ensure all areas have trained mechanics to service these vehicles. This not only adds value to the mechanics who earn a living but also ensues proper vehicle servicing and repairs. C&G provides tools as well.

- Boda boda safety training -

C&G also runs a safety campaign with St John Ambulance. Here, two and three–wheeler riders are taught how to handle injuries, understand and follow traffic rules, ensuring that they are aware of the importance of their safety and their passengers´. This has been to towns like Kitengela and Maragwa and will in June and July head to Namanga and Machakos. - C&G Motocross Championships -

C&G is the title sponsor of this year´s Motocross Championships in Kenya. The company signed a Shs 750,000 sponsorship agreement with the East African Motor sports Foundation. This will provide opportunities for the youth to venture into motor sports. C&G Sponsors Motocross
